No início eram apenas dois jovens amigos que possuíam interesses musicais similares por bandas como Death in June Boyd Rice até que num determinado momento se uniram para formar o Luftwaffe. A banda formou-se em 1997 sendo fundada por b9 InViD and j1 StatiK. A oratória e a música do Luftwaffe deriva basicamente de várias escolas e correntes filosóficas tais como o Solipsismo e o Niilismo, além de várias influências e citaçoes sobre a mitologia Hindu e budista. Ao longo de sua existência a dupla vem colaborando com o trabalho de várias bandas importantes deste cenário como Valence, Death In June, Boyd Rice, State Research Bureau, Ostara, Survival Unit, Nookleptia, Jason Hyde, Pyrrhic Victory, AIT! e Panicsville.
